On several of our walks, my friend Heather Lane and I would talk about landscaping, native plants, and how science works. We would walk around and point things out in vacant lots or in front yards.

For a neighborhood art project in NE Portland, I asked Heather Lane to lead a botanical tour of a "vacant" lot. She had many interesting views to share. She described the types of successful plants in the lot as well as the nature of vacant lots in cities and what we find there and why. People were receptive and had views of their own.
